Thailand has very modern mobile networks that service most of the country, there are three major providers: AIS, DTAC and True Move.
A few mobile apps will make our trip very convenient, so we will need a good nation wide data provider. Upon arrival at the airport, SIM cards are available for purchase, but you must wait in lines with many others. Other options are to purchase the SIM outside of the airport, but that will leave you without data service until the purchase.
We first thought of purchasing a local SIM card in Thailand for data services, but have concerns about our late arrival time and long lines at the airport. I'm taking a chance and purchased a pre-paid service (found on Amazon) before leaving Canada. All I have to do is insert the SIM card into our phone upon landing in Bangkok, configure my phone and hope it works! Ideally, all goes well and the data service will activate immediately when we arrive in Thailand! This will allow us to contact our hotel or taxi service.
After landing, we will purchase another SIM card from the 7-Eleven for the other mobile device we are carrying. It seems that a provider called AIS is the best option for tourists, we will select a package after comparing the various options. The most economical option is to purchase in Thailand, however have a SIM card even before landing is a nice convenience to have.
