Buy a SIM card before leaving your home country

Thailand has very modern mobile networks that service most of the country, there are three major providers: AIS, DTAC and True Move.

A few mobile apps will make our trip very convenient, so we will need a good nation wide data provider.  Upon arrival at the airport, SIM cards are available for purchase, but you must wait in lines with many others.  Other options are to purchase the SIM outside of the airport, but that will leave you without data service until the purchase.

We first thought of purchasing a local SIM card in Thailand for data services, but have concerns about our late arrival time and long lines at the airport.  I'm taking a chance and purchased a pre-paid service (found on Amazon) before leaving Canada.  All I have to do is insert the SIM card into our phone upon landing in Bangkok, configure my phone and hope it works!  Ideally, all goes well and the data service will activate immediately when we arrive in Thailand!  This will allow us to contact our hotel or taxi service.

One of our phones has dual SIM slots, so we will try it in there.

After landing, we will purchase another SIM card from the 7-Eleven for the other mobile device we are carrying.  It seems that a provider called AIS is the best option for tourists, we will select a package after comparing the various options.  The most economical option is to purchase in Thailand, however have a SIM card even before landing is a nice convenience to have.

Save $$$ - travel with Wise

Using a credit card while traveling has some perks.  Most credit cards are accepted worldwide and offer great flexibility to pay for large or small items, and you can accumulate points!  The credit card will automatically convert the foreign currency to the local currency so you can pay the balance from your home bank account.  This sounds ideal but you will lose much of your hard-earned money in fees and exchange rates that favour the bank.  Fees add up quickly and you don't want to have this shock when the credit card bill arrives.  Over the years, we have learned various strategies to save money while abroad, the Wise Debit card is our preferred payment method. What is Wise debit?  This card works just like a debit card from your bank, except that you can use it in many countries around the world for a fraction of the cost.  Payment is made via a physical or virtual card, it's easy to add Wise to Apple Pay or Google Wallet so you can tap and go....

Portugal trip with moms

Now that the holiday season is over, it's time to think about our next travel destination.  Our last trip in February of 2024 to Morocco included a short stopover in Lisbon, Portugal.  Although we only stayed for two days in the capital city; Portugal kept calling us to return for another visit. We thought our moms would enjoy this trip with us, there was no hesitation on their part to come along.  With their confirmation, we immediately got to work booking flights.  Portugal, here we come!

Find Penguins platform

Before leaving to Portugal, we wanted to track the travel path during our visit.  Although Google Maps is a great resource for navigation and locating points of interest, an interesting platform popped up on a search called Find Penguins .  This app will automatically track your location while you move around and create a map of your travels.  Find Penguins has been available for over 10 years, we just discovered it now. To make the most of this platform, travellers create Footprints, at any point of interest during the trip.  A Footprint allows for photos, videos and text to be added (similar to a Facebook post), additionally, your phone will log the GPS coordinates along with the elevation and local weather along the way.  During a trip, a number of Footprints can be created, which help to document the trip with photos/videos along with text to help you remember the details.  The best part is that this platform is free! Well, what does Find Penguins get f...
